Bird deterrent for windows in Saxony-Anhalt

Project report HAVERKAMP birdsafe® Oranienbaum-Wörlitz

Biosphärenreservat Mittelelbe, Oranienbaum-Wörlitz (D)

The object

The Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve was recognized by UNESCO in 1979, making it one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany. Located in Saxony-Anhalt, the area of about 125,000 hectares is known for its rich diversity of unique plants and animals. The reserve is home to over 250 different bird species, and is also an important stopover for migratory birds. The administration building is located directly in the reserve, next to the bird feeding station. The large windows of the building thus posed a risk to the birds, because birds do not perceive glass panes and window fronts as obstacles and fly in front of them. More than 100 million birds die worldwide every year due to the so-called bird strike.

The requirement

The management and staff of the reserve were correspondingly sensitized. The risk of bird strikes had to be minimized in any case. A cost-efficient as well as highly effective solution was sought to make the windows visible to the birds, but without changing the appearance of the building and without impairing the view to the outside. After intensive research, consultation appointments and bid comparisons, the Reserve team decided to coat the windows with HAVERKAMP birdsafe® bird protection film. "We were not only convinced by the transparency and the quick installation, but also by the fact that HAVERKAMP applied a discreet diamond pattern to the film based on current research by some bird protection organizations, which has a particularly high level of effectiveness," says Andreas Regner from the Central Elbe Biosphere Reserve..

The solution

The diamond pattern on HAVERKAMP birdsafe® bird deterrent for windows makes glass visible as an obstacle for birds. At the same time, the film itself is color-neutral-transparent, maintenance-free and easy to retrofit. At the same time, HAVERKAMP birdsafe® offers effective shatter protection in case of glass breakage and contributes to the protection of the interior with an integrated UV protection. "Our task as a biosphere reserve is to protect the biodiversity of the unique bird populations in our area. The building, which is located behind the bird feeding station, was a thorn in our side. The bird protection film from HAVERKAMP now achieves exactly the effect we were hoping for. Since the film was mounted on the windows, the birds literally slow down in front of it and land safely at the feeding station," says Andreas Regner.
